Early Childhood and Lower School April News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I hope this message finds you well and that you had a restful and joyful spring break with your families. As we move into the final weeks of the school year, there are many exciting events and important updates to share. Please take a few moments to read through everything carefully.

Parent Coffees: Looking Ahead to the 2025 to 2026 School Year
Erica Clark, our Director of Student Success, and I are looking forward to hosting two parent coffees to begin conversations about the upcoming school year. While there is still plenty of learning and fun ahead in the current year, we also enjoy looking forward to what lies ahead for your child.

  • Parents and caregivers of students in kindergarten through third grade are invited to join us on April 15 from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. in the Doerschlag Den.
  • Families with students in Little Jags and prekindergarten are invited to attend on April 16 from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. in the Doerschlag Den.
  • Fourth grade families will have the chance to learn more about the middle school experience at our “Welcome to Middle School” event in mid-May.

Feedback Welcomed
Just as we offer students feedback to help them grow, your feedback is incredibly valuable to us as a school community. We are committed to living out our mission and values, and your perspective helps us do that even better. Please complete this ten-minute survey by the end of April. Senior leadership will read every response and use the insights you share to improve and refine our work. You will be asked to complete one form for each division in which you have a child enrolled.

Dress Code
My own boys are already excited to switch out their pants for shorts now that the weather is warming up, and their pants are starting to look a little too short. As your family transitions to spring wardrobes, please take a moment to review the dress code attached to this email and make sure your child comes to school dressed for learning. If needed, teachers will send home a friendly reminder form to help support dress code expectations.

MAP Testing
Students in second, third, and fourth grade will soon complete their final round of MAP Growth testing through the Northwest Evaluation Association. The results from this round of testing will be posted in Veracross in late May. Moving forward, we will post your child’s MAP growth report each fall and spring in Veracross, and share the mid-year results with you during the March parent-teacher conferences.

Help Share Good Wishes
Please join us in offering best wishes to Mrs. Laurie Parsons as she prepares to retire at the end of this school year. She is completing her 23rd year at Wellington and her 40th year in education. Mrs. Parsons has made countless contributions to our community through her leadership of grade-level plays, school performances, and Music Moves Me events. We are thrilled to welcome Alyson Vigneron into this role beginning next school year, and she is eager to continue the wonderful work that Mrs. Parsons has built.

Homeroom Placements
These final two months of school always seem to move quickly, and they are often filled with tremendous growth for our students. During this time, we also begin the important work of creating homeroom placements for the next school year. This process involves collaboration between homeroom teachers, special area teachers, and the student success team. Together, we aim to build classroom communities that are balanced and supportive of both academic and social-emotional needs. While we do not accept specific teacher requests, we do welcome your insights about the kind of environment or teacher qualities that help your child thrive. Homeroom placements will be shared with families in early August as we prepare for a great start to the new year.

As we move into the final stretch of the school year, the energy and curiosity across our classrooms remain strong. This month alone, we have witnessed joyful and meaningful learning in so many forms. Forest Fridays and LEAP Days have returned, offering opportunities for students to build community and engage in rich, experiential learning. A class of prekindergarten students proudly shared their discoveries during a space exhibition, showcasing what they learned through a student-centered theme. In fourth grade, students are exploring economics through an interdisciplinary unit that combines social studies, math, and literacy, and they will design their own food trucks as a culmination project. These moments remind us that although the end of the year is near, the learning continues with purpose and excitement until the very last day.

Best,
Shelley Brown
