Early Childhood and Lower School September News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I love starting my day by walking through every classroom each morning. Our Little Jags and prekindergarten students are becoming more comfortable with their goodbye routines and beginning their day in a play area of their choice. Their big smiles and hellos to each other remind me how quickly young children acclimate to a new environment, and the few teary-eyed children remind me that goodbyes can still be difficult for some children (and parents, too!).

It is important to continue to arrive at school on time so that students may participate in important morning work and have time to easily settle into the day. A caregiver is always invited to walk their child to the classroom door between 8-8:15 a.m., say goodbye in car line, or say goodbye in the rotunda.

It was a pleasure to see so many of you at Parent and Caregiver Night last night. I am positive you walked away with a more complete understanding of our grade-level programs. A few learning moments that have taken place thus far are below:

  • Little Jags and prekindergarten students have met with our early childhood French teacher, Mr. Mercuri. Mr. Mercuri loves teaching our youngest learners colors, numbers, and greetings.
  • Our kindergarten and fourth grade buddy program is up and running. Building leadership skills alongside empathy is an integral part of this program, and our fourth graders take their role as buddies very seriously.
  • We welcomed Upper Arlington Mayor Ukeme Awakessien Jeter to our first lower school town meeting to share the importance of coming to school. The slogan for attendance this year is “Be present, be strong,” and Mayor Awakessien Jeter wrote and shared a proclamation about the importance of strong school attendance at Wellington.
  • Early childhood students attended their first town meeting, where they sang songs, celebrated September birthdays, and played a fun game together. Early childhood students will begin to share their learning at town meetings beginning in October; imagine being a five-year-old and using your strong voice to share your learning with over 130 peers!

As we turn the corner into the middle of the first trimester, we find it important to provide each family with a summary of how their child is adjusting to the school year. Second through fourth graders are currently taking the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) reading and math tests. The information gathered from the assessments will be one baseline data point to inform instruction, along with data from Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), student observations, and classroom assignments. Interims will be published on October 4 and shared with the parent email address(es) entered into Veracross. A more comprehensive report will be shared at parent-teacher conferences in November, but we hope this interim report provides helpful information about your child’s experience thus far at Wellington.

Best,
