A Culture of Creativity

The Wellington Visual Arts Department, led by Jaime Bennati and Shannon Smith, encourages students to embrace the creative process and put their work into the world. Both Bennati and Smith are not only skilled educators but also accomplished artists who regularly exhibit their own work. Their commitment to modeling artistic courage and self-expression inspires students to take bold steps in their own creative journeys.

“While putting your artwork out there can be intimidating, offering guidance, support, and encouragement to take the leap is key,” said Bennati. “When your art is recognized after you’ve poured so much time and energy into it, it’s incredibly validating.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Wellington students have participated in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for over a decade, consistently earning recognition for their skill, originality, and creativity. This year’s honorees join a long list of notable alumni recognized by the competition, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Amanda Gorman, and Andy Warhol.

Congratulations to Donovan, Nila, Katherine, Zoey, Ellie, and Lilly on this incredible achievement!
