I’ve always marched to my own beat. While my high school friends were listening to R.E.M., U2, The Cure, or LL Cool J, I was jamming to mellow soft rock. I’ll save my love for yacht rock for another time, but for now, I want to share the lessons I’ve drawn from Michael McDonald’s experiences.
Michael McDonald’s remarkable career exemplifies values like authenticity, perseverance, collaboration, and purpose. Known for his distinct voice and soulful style, he has stayed true to his sound, creating music that resonates personally rather than conforming to industry trends. His resilience shines through challenges, such as being dropped by RCA Records early in his career, which he overcame to find success with the Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist. Traveling everywhere with his trusty keyboard, McDonald practiced relentlessly, focusing on even the basics to maintain his creative edge. He collaborated with others not for reputation but for the sheer joy of making music. His kindness and generosity left as much of an impact as his artistry, with those who worked alongside him feeling better for the experience.
As we head into winter break, I hope our students can take a page from his example: finding joy in the process, practicing the fundamentals, and sharing kindness and connection in everything they do. This is the spirit I hope they bring into the new year.
In January, I look forward to seeing how they continue to grow, supported by all of us who are invested in their success. Thank you for being such essential partners in this work and for trusting us to guide your children to live the mission and values.
I wish you all a restful and joyful winter break.
Warm regards,
Rishi
