Early Childhood and Lower School December News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

December’s shorter days and colder nights remind us to pause and care for ourselves during winter’s slower pace. Yet, within Wellington’s walls, our students bring an energy that keeps our days lively and bright! The students’ curiosity, joy, and hard work light up even the darkest of days, reminding us that winter is a time not just to slow down but to find warmth and connection in the community.

  • First graders became movie producers as they completed their first stop motion movie in their WIRED (Wellington Innovation, Robotics, Engineering, and Design) classes. Working with a partner, they developed a story, created the props, and then used their knowledge of stop motion to create the final product.
  • Third graders researched and wrote about upstanders using nonfiction texts and online resources. They shared their projects with the class, showcasing their research, writing, and public speaking skills. Their work is displayed in the lower school hallway—be sure to check it out!
  • Fourth graders dove into the legislative process by learning how a bill becomes a law. Instead of just studying it, they actively participated—writing, debating, and voting on a bill. After approval from both the "House" and "Senate," the bill was signed into law by "President" Mrs. Brown and "Vice-President" Mr. Frank. Be sure to ask a fourth grader about their new school law for the year!

It has been exciting to see such strong parent attendance at the morning coffees focused how assessments guide instruction, the math journey at Wellington, and the kindergarten and first grade previews. Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

  • Winter parties will be held on December 19: Early Childhood at 10 a.m. and Lower School at 1:45 p.m.
  • The Early Childhood and Lower School Community Sing will take place on December 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the ROHR. Students will sing winter songs together in a beloved tradition celebrating the season. Families are invited to join and share in the joy. After the sing, parents should escort their children back to their classrooms and confirm dismissal with the teacher to ensure all students are accounted for.
  • Winter Break concludes on January 5, and we will welcome everyone back to school on January 6!
  • Love and Limits Parent Coffee on January 15 at 8:15 a.m. in the Doerschlag Den: Parenting today can feel overwhelming with all the competing advice—gentle parenting, firm boundaries, or something in between. How do you find the balance that works for you and your child? Join us to learn practical strategies, share in meaningful conversations, and leave feeling more confident in your parenting journey! You may RSVP here.
  • Second through fourth graders will hit the slopes on January 15 for their first Winter Wednesday at Mad River Mountain. Take some time over break to ensure the snow clothes still fit and THINK SNOW!

As we embrace this season of reflection and connection, may we continue to find inspiration in the energy and curiosity of our students. Thank you for being an important part of the Wellington community and for helping us create a warm and supportive environment. Wishing you a peaceful and joyful winter season filled with moments of rest and togetherness.

Best,
Shelley Brown
